On September 11, 2001, four planes were scheduled to leave American airports within twenty-five minutes of each other. Aboard each of those planes were terrorists who had planned a coordinated attack on American buildings. Two of the planes flew into the twin towers of New York City's World Trade Center.
Hundreds of firefighters and thirty-seven Port Authority police officers, trying to rescue people from the burning buildings, died when both towers unexpectedly collapsed. Sgt. John McLoughlin and Officer Will Jimeno, buried twenty feet below the rubble, were among the last survivors to be pulled from the wreckage. The bodies of thousands of people were never recovered.
