Hal Moore was a Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army when he received his orders to "find and engage the enemy." It was November of 1965.
Bruce Crandall and his 16 "Huey" crews flew Moore and his men into the Ia Drang Valley in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Joe Galloway, a reporter for United Press International, tagged along. Col. Moore and his men had no idea that their Landing Zone (LZ X-Ray) was close to the place where 2000 North Vietnamese soldiers had gathered. Soon 450 Americans were surrounded.
In the movie, "We Were Soldiers," you will see the legendary first battle of the Vietnam War come alive on screen as Mel Gibson plays Hal Moore. In our story behind the movie, you will follow links to meet the real people (Hal Moore, Joe Galloway, Bruce Crandall and Basil Plumley) and see the real places (LZ X-Ray, LZ Albany and the scenes of battle). You will also take a trip to the National Archives to see what members of the Johnson Administration knew, and considered, before they escalated the war.
