Pirates of the Caribbean, hard at work during the 17th century,
captured Spanish ships and plundered the treasure-shipping ports of the
Spanish Main. Their centrally located base of operations was Port Royal
in southern Jamaica.
Men like Edward Teach (more commonly known as "Blackbeard") were famous
pirates who met their deaths in battle. Privateers, like Henry Morgan
and Woodes Rogers, became "respectable" governors of Caribbean islands.
But at its heyday of pirate activity, Port Royal was devastated by an
undersea earthquake and two-thirds of the town slid into the sea.
