Cold Mountain, the home of Charles Frazier's great-great uncle, W.P.
Inman, is located in North Carolina. It is the place where Inman, a
Confederate deserter following the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg,
sought refuge from the carnage of America's War Between the States.
Inman's constant travel companion, as he made his way home to Ada, was
Travels Through North and South Carolina, a book by William Bartram.
In the movie, Cold Mountain, you will see Jude Law and Nicole Kidman
play the roles of Inman and Ada. In our story behind the movie you will
learn about the Home Guard, "visit" the real Cold Mountain, view
pictures of the siege of Petersburg and its viciously brutal Battle of
the Crater, and see the currency used by Confederates like Inman and
