Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, two fictional killers in the movie
"Chicago," were based on real people whose murder trials took place in 1924.
Despite Prohibition laws that made alcohol illegal, Belva Gaertner (the
real Velma Kelly) and Beulah Annan (the real Roxie Hart) had no trouble
getting all the liquor they wanted. And W.W. O'Brien (Chicago's
publicity-seeking lawyer whose real-life exploits gave rise to fictional
Billy Flynn) actually turned his accused clients into celebrities
through his orchestrated press conferences.
In the movie "Chicago," you will see "The Roaring Twenties" come alive
on screen. In our story behind the movie, you will meet not only "Roxie
Hart" and "Velma Kelly," but also Maurine Dallas Watkins, the actual
"Chicago Tribune" reporter who turned her front-page trial stories into
a play on which the film is based. Brought to you by Click2Flicks, a
