Frank Abagnale, Catch Me if You Can, The Story Behind the Movie

Frank Abagnale and Carl Hanratty, the two main characters in the movie "Catch Me If You Can," are based on real people. It's just that Carl Hanratty is a fictitous name for Joe Shea, the actual FBI agent who first caught (but couldn't hold) Abagnale.

Many agents and police officers worldwide unsuccessfully tried to catch him. Abagnale was finally arrested at his local grocery store after a former girlfriend and Air France flight attendant spotted him in Montpellier. He served a wretched six months in Perpignan prison.
