Brotherhood of the Wolf The Story Behind the Movie

A ravaging animal roamed the southern French countryside between 1763-1767. By the time it was finally caught, about 100 people had been killed. Many of the dead were women and children.

Some folks thought "The Beast of Gevaudan" was a wolf, although survivors swore it wasn't. King Louis XV sent his best hunter to track down the marauding animal, but even he wasn't successful. It was up to the Marquis d'Apcher, a young nobleman, to organize a party of skilled hunters. Jean Chastel, a member of that group, finally killed the beast - still known in France as "la Bete du Gevaudan."

"Brotherhood of the Wolf," the movie, is loosely based on the legend of la Bete. In our story behind the movie, you will learn which aspects of the tale are fact and which are fiction.
