Alex and Emma, the two fictional characters in the movie of the same
name, are based on real people who lived in the 19th century. The
storyline of the movie is taken from actual events in their lives.
Fyodor Dostoevsky, the famous author of such novels as Crime and
Punishment and Brothers Karamazov, is the real Alex. His passion for
the roulette wheel caused him endless financial problems culminating in
a very bad deal with a rogue publisher. To avoid losing his publishing
rights for a decade, Dostoevsky had to write his novel, The Gambler, in
thirty days. He couldn't do it without the help of a stenographer -
Anna Snitkina - the real Emma.
In the movie "Alex and Emma," you will see a fictional story loosely
based on real life. In our story behind the movie, you will meet not
only "Alex and Emma" but also Polina Suslova, Dostoevsky's lover who
